Request formulation by Vietnamese learners of English Request formulation by Vietnamese learners of English HOT

This study employs discourse completion tasks (DCTs) to investigate the formulations of requests by Vietnamese learners of English in an English speaking environment. The study
shows that most learners opt for the use ofquery preparatory strategy and external modification to formulate their requests in three given situations. This request strategy is the most common for both native and non-native speakers of English in the literature. There was
an underuse of internal modification and no use of direct request types.The remaining two requests are formulated in the form of strong hints. The findings are basically in line with previous interlanguage pragmatic literature.
